It can only be described as a ‘soft’ day when the first year pupils from Scoil Mhuire took to the hockey field to play Ashton secondary school B Team on Thursday 6th of March.
The double decker bus trip down was described by one pupil as ‘an emotional roller coaster’ as we made the trip down from the hill to the Mardyke Arena.
As the teams lined out it could nearly be considered a home game for the girls from Scoil Mhuire due to the travelling supporters.
The game itself was a close contest, as Ashton contested the match from the word go. It was Catherine McKenna who broke the dead lock with a super individual performance and put Scoil Mhuire up in the first half with a match winning performance from the get go.
This was followed closely in the second half by an all-star performance from our goalkeeper Niamh Wiseman who in her own words ‘saved a goal’ and saved the day on more than one occasion as she lead from the back.
Halfway through the second period Muireann Heaney finished off a fine move to put the Scoil Mhuire girls two goals to the good and the game finished two nil to Scoil Mhuire
Speaking to David the Hockey coach after the match he was delighted with the win against a very strong Ashton team, a huge improvement was visible in today’s performance and the travelling Scoil Mhuire supporters had a lot to do with our win.
