Three teams recently took part in the Junior Schools’ Debating Competition organised by UCC Philosophical Society. Sorchadh Boland and Aoife Crotty argued against the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools; Rebecca O’Shaughnessy and Deirbhile Ní Dheasmhúnigh were dealt the old chestnut about raising the legal drinking age to 21; and Alexandria O’Donnell and Jeanne O’Sullivan had the daunting task of arguing in favour of the rights to privacy of politicians. The standard in all debates was very high. Alexandria will progress to the Quarter Final as an individual speaker, and there is a possibility of another team and individual going through as wildcards. Watch this space for updates!
